Texting Before a First Meet: What to Say and What to Skip

What to text before you meet someone from a dating site: first messages, building comfort and the red flags to notice.

The messages you send before you meet someone do two jobs: they help you decide whether you want to meet, and they help the other person feel comfortable. You don't need to be charming. You need to be clear, kind and consistent. Here's how.

Write a first message that gets a reply

"Hey" gets a reply from almost nobody. Mention something from the other person's profile and ask one easy question.

Instead of "hey"

"I saw you're into live music. Seen anyone good lately?"

"Your camping photo made me laugh. Was that the trip you mention in your bio?"

Keep it short, don't open with anything sexual, and don't send the same line to everyone.

Keep early chats on the site

Stay on Casual Encounters for the first conversations. Messages here are moderated, and we alert you if someone tries to move the chat to an outside app. Someone who pushes to switch to another app straight away is following one of the most common scam patterns. If it's genuine, a few days of messaging here won't bother them.

Build comfort before you meet

Moving from texting to meeting

A few days of messages is usually plenty. When it feels right, suggest something specific, so the other person has something to say yes or no to:

Example

"I'd like to meet. Are you free for a drink on Thursday evening? There's a busy bar near the center that I like."

Choose a public place for the first meet, arrange your own way home, and tell a friend where you're going. Our first-meet checklist has the full list.

Say what you want, and ask

Before you meet, check you want the same thing. Ask it straight: "I'm looking for something casual. Is that what you want?" Say you'll use condoms, and ask what they're comfortable with. It can feel awkward by text, but it's far easier now than in the moment. Our consent and boundaries guide has simple ways to put it.

Be careful with photos and explicit messages

Anything you send can be saved. Don't send anything you wouldn't be comfortable having shared, and never send images to someone you don't trust yet. Explicit images are blurred with a warning before you view them. If anyone threatens to share something unless you pay, don't pay. Stop replying, keep the evidence and read our guide to scams.

Red flags in text

If you're not interested

Say so kindly, and say it early. "I've enjoyed chatting, but I don't think we're a match. Take care" is enough. Members who reply to messages build a good reputation on the site, and a clear no is a favor to both of you.

Rule of thumb: if someone makes you feel rushed, uncomfortable or confused in their messages, believe that feeling. You can block or report them at any time.
